One of the many things I love about The Vampire Diaries is the dense, rich backstory from 1864.

"Children of the Damned" was the second episode to provide flashbacks into the time the Salvatore brothers fell in love with the vampire Katherine, and it just added more mysteries and more mythology to the series.

At this point, The Vampire Diaries could spend an entire season in 1864 and I'd be happy.

The latest trip introduced the vampire Pearl and her daughter Annabel (aka present-day Anna), a duo working with Katherine in Mystic Falls.

Knowing that Pearl is one of the 26 other vampires in Katherine's Tomb opens the door to one major question: who are the other 25?

An even bigger question surrounds Damon. While Stefan was under the impression that Katherine used her vampire powers to manipulate the brothers, Damon showed that, even as a human, he was desperately in love with Katherine and wanted her to turn him.

As strange as it sounds, proving that Damon was just as evil and twisted as a human is kind of sweet, because his relationship with Katherine, however perverse, seems as real and honest as the one between Stefan and Elena.

Just when you thought The Vampire Diaries had run out of twists and turns, last night's episode proved there's an endless supply of shocks for fans.

First was the revelation that Damon was trying to bring Katherine and 26 other vampires back to life for a killing spree, then Damon bit Bonnie when she burned the necklace, and finally, the episode ended with Aunt Jenna's dead ex-boyfriend Logan coming back, in vampire form.

Those are just some of the reasons, The Vampire Diaries climbed to new heights last night with more than 4.5 million viewers, the highest since the season premiere. While other shows drop in viewers every week, The Vampire Diaries had been in a steady climb for the past four episodes, but in terms of viewers and quality.

But the big question is what role the two men in Aunt Jenna's life will play. Logan's return is sure to lead to some major upheaval in Mystic Falls.

Not only is he now a vampire, but he knows all the secrets of the Council, the group of townspeople trying to stop the vampire attacks. I'm guessing we haven't seen the end of shocking and sudden deaths.

Adding to the intrigue is Jenna's new man, history teacher Alaric Saltzman. Regardless of what role he plays in the books, it seems pretty obvious that he's NOT a vampire. First, it's exactly what the show wants us to think.

Between the giant ring he wears as a family heirloom and his hesitance to enter the house uninvited, all signs pointed to vampire.

For anyone who's ever watched TV before, you know that when all the clues are screaming in one direction, it's a complete red herring.

In just nine short episodes, The Vampire Diaries has proven that it's not a silly obvious show that does exactly what you think it will, so Alaric is definitely not a vampire.

Of course, maybe that's just what they want us to think. I've actually convinced myself so much that he can't possibly be a vampire, that him turning out to be exactly what the signs point to might be an even bigger twist.

Regardless of whether Alaric is or is not a vampire, there's no way a tall and mysterious new teacher shows up without a hidden agenda.

So now we have an evil vampire ex-boyfriend, a mysterious history teacher, a witch, a good vampire, a bad vampire whose plans have been ruined and a Council full of people who want to kill all the vampires.

Next episode, the mid-season finale and last new episode until January, is called "The Turning Point." Something big is definitely going to go down, and with so many players in the mix, I have no idea which one to focus on.

My only hope is that those 27 vampires trapped in the church basement aren't gone forever, because I got way too excited about that possibility for it to already be over.

At last, the time has come for Elena to learn the truth about Stefan on The Vampire Diaries. After five episodes of pondering all the evidence (all the mystery, the animal attacks, the miraculously healing wound from the football game, and the names in the old town registry) pointing to the fact that he is a vampire, Stefan finally comes clean to Elena, who, as you would have expected, doesn't take the news very well.

And her quick google search about vampires in the fiction world has only made matters worse.

But Stefan tries his best to explain everything to Elena this week and you can catch a glimpse of their conversation in the "Lost Girls" clip below.

In a nutshell, Stefan clarifies the deal with garlic, sunlight, crucifixes, holy water, mirrors, and all the other vampire myths. He also asserts that animal blood, and not human blood, keeps him alive.

But it looks like no amount of explanation will get him on the good side of Elena, who is still upset because Stefan allowed Damon to get involved with Caroline.

Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder told us that the show would eventually delve into the Salvatore brothers' sordid past - and they'll soon deliver.

"For someone to [promise a person an eternity of misery], they must have done something really horrible, something to warrant that kind of promise," Somerhalder says. "Those things are fun to find out," he teases.

Get ready for the fun! In the Oct. 15 episode, "Lost Girls," we'll see a Civil War-era Stefan, Damon and Katherine (played by Nina Dobrev, of course), and learn how the brothers' blood feud started.

We'll also see why Somerhalder's Damon is happy to be frozen in time as "the eternal stud," while Stefan (Paul Wesley) is more tortured about being a 150-year-old teenager.

"Nina and [costar Katerina Graham, who plays Bonnie] and all the people on the show, we're all sort of the same age," Wesley says. "So it's hard for me when I'm on set, I have to really get to this place where I'm like, 'Wait. I'm like their grandfather.' You know what I mean?"

Here are two clips from Thursday's "You're Undead to Me," which starts to reveal Stefan and Damon's long history with Mystic Falls and introduces us to Bonnie's grandmother (guest star Jasmine Guy), who helps Bonnie begin to understand her special talents.

With "Family Ties," The Vampire Diaries delivered a slower entry designed to build up its characters (new and old) before, no doubt, returning to murder, revelations and football in upcoming episodes.

To say the episode was slow is not to say it was without surprises. The last quarter of the story featured two twists on top of one another. One of these story turns I saw coming, and the other completely surprised me while leaving this episode with a great aftertaste. More on that later.

The town believes they've caught and killed what's been ripping apart their friends and neighbors. Who do they think was the culprit? A 12-foot puma.

Aunt Jenna left Mystic Falls for a period of time because her relationship with now-local newscaster Logan Fell went south. Why? "Her name was Monica, wasn't it?"

The herb Stefan put in the necklace he gave to Elena in "Friday Night Bites" is called vervain. If only he had it in larger amounts, he might be able to beat Damon without feeding on human blood. Unfortunately, long ago Damon acted as the vervain DEA and made sure the herb could no longer grow in the town of Mystic Falls.

Zack has been growing vervain in the basement. Somebody's been preparing for Damon's return.

Damon doesn't care for Twilight and Caroline wonders why he doesn't sparkle in the sunlight.

Caroline's Mom is the sheriff and her father is in Memphis...with Stephen.

Bonnie's not only psychic. She's a...fire starter?

Aunt Jenna likes cheese fries.

Supposedly, Damon hid a crystal inside a chest long ago. At The Founder's Party, he retrieves this long-lost and probably powerful item. At episode's end, Caroline is in possession of the crystal.

Ty's parents, Caroline's mom, and even nice newscaster Logan seem to be making like the parents on Elm Street and are taking the fate of Mystic Falls into their own hands.

After five bodies have been drained of all blood, the group is positive that "they've come back." Not only that, but the group needs a Gilbert family heirloom - a pocket watch currently in the possession of Jeremy. Logan volunteers to get it.
